How to register as a nurse in Australia with Ahpra

The pathway for internationally qualified nurses, from the self-check to the outcomes-based assessment.

In Australia, nurses are registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) through Ahpra. Internationally qualified nurses follow a set pathway.

Quick Summary

  1. Start with the self-check on the NMBA website. It tells you which stream applies to you. Some nurses can apply for registration directly, while others must complete an outcomes-based assessment (OBA), which includes a multiple-choice exam and an OSCE.

The main steps

  1. Complete the NMBA self-check for internationally qualified nurses.
  2. Meet the English language registration standard.
  3. Complete the orientation and any assessment your stream needs.
  4. Apply to Ahpra for registration.

Important Note: Registration does not give you the right to live or work in Australia. Check visas on the official Department of Home Affairs website.
