Nursing in Canada is regulated by each province and territory. Internationally educated nurses usually go through a credential review and then apply to the regulator where they want to work.
Quick Summary
- Most internationally educated nurses start with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), then apply to a provincial regulator such as the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) or BCCNM. Many will also need to pass the NCLEX-RN and show English or French language skills.
The main steps
- Choose the province where you want to work.
- Check that regulator’s current requirements.
- Apply to NNAS for a credential review, if your regulator uses it.
- Apply to the provincial regulator and complete any assessment it asks for.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN if required, then receive your registration.
Important Note: Nursing registration and immigration are separate. For work permits and permanent residence, use the official Government of Canada website.
