Working as a nurse in Canada: registration basics

How NNAS, provincial regulators and the NCLEX-RN fit together for internationally educated nurses.

Nursing in Canada is regulated by each province and territory. Internationally educated nurses usually go through a credential review and then apply to the regulator where they want to work.

Quick Summary

  1. Most internationally educated nurses start with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), then apply to a provincial regulator such as the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) or BCCNM. Many will also need to pass the NCLEX-RN and show English or French language skills.

The main steps

  1. Choose the province where you want to work.
  2. Check that regulator’s current requirements.
  3. Apply to NNAS for a credential review, if your regulator uses it.
  4. Apply to the provincial regulator and complete any assessment it asks for.
  5. Pass the NCLEX-RN if required, then receive your registration.

Important Note: Nursing registration and immigration are separate. For work permits and permanent residence, use the official Government of Canada website.
